Most English teachers in Madrid know where to get good, cheap food. Here’s a list of some of my favorite places to get a well-priced menu del día at lunchtime (usually a starter, main course, desert, bread, and a beverage). Many of these places are very popular, so go early (around 2 p.m.) to get a table. (I've put links to the Web sites of those restaurants that have them, so you can check out photos of their food! Many of these places also have reasonably priced menus for à la carte dining in the evening.)

Laan Café (Calle de Pelayo, 28; Metro Chueca) Mostly Mediterranean, with some fusion and Asian-inspired dishes as well; cost is around €12
La Finca de Susana (Calle Arlaban, 4; Metro Sevilla) Mediterranean food; cost is around €9
La Gloria de Montera (Calle Caballero de Gracias, 10; Metro Sol or Gran Via) Mediterranean food; cost is around €9
La Isla del Tesoro (Manuela Malasaña, 3; Metro Bilbao) Vegetarian food, with a different ethnic cuisine highlighted each day for lunch; cost is around €10
Kawara (Closed!!! Calle Aduana, 23; Metro Sevilla or Gran Via) Japanese food; different menu options around €11 and up (price does not include drink, but you get a lot of food)
Momo (Calle de la Libertad, 8; Metro Chueca) Mediterranean food; cost is around €10
Pink Sushiman (Calle Caballero de Gracias, 8; Metro Sol or Gran Via) Japanese food; menu around €10 lets you choose five dishes from revolving sushi belt or off the à la carte menu
Samurai (Calle Cuesta de Santo Domingo, 24; Metro Santo Domingo or Callao) Japanese food; different menu options around €12 and up

Update on Pink Sushiman: The last time I went, the service was appalling! The food was still good (the sushi is better at other places, but the hot dishes are nice at Pink Sushiman), but the service was among the worst I've seen. We had to ask them at least three times for our drinks and soup (included with lunch), whereas the Spanish clients on either side of us received theirs right away. We couldn't even get their attention when we wanted to pay the bill, so we almost left without paying (but being honest folk, we waited it out...). Was it just a bad day? Or has this place gotten too popular too fast? I probably won't go back to find out...
